In contrast with bekal fort, this fort is not at all maintained. Even you cannot complete the circular walk. From one side of the fort there is a view of the bekal river. Not a suggested visiting place.

South-east of Kasaragod town, about four kms from Bekal, stand the ruins of the Chandragiri fort.
In ancient times, River Chandragiri, which flows near the fort, bordered the two kingdoms of Kolathunadu and Tulunadu. Later, the region around the river came under the Vijayanagara Empire. When the empire fell, the Keladi Nayakas, who had carried out the administration, took control of the area.

When Shivappa Nayak took over the reins, he renovated and built many forts. One of them was the Chandragiri fort, which he built in the 17th century. The fort is now managed by the Department of Archaeology. Near the confluence of the Payaswini River and the Arabian Sea, remnants of the Fort can be seen, on a small hill on which it was built. The ruined fort is about 46 m above sea level and covers an area of seven acres. The old laterite walls that overlook the sea still bear the marks of the cannonball attacks. The incessantly flowing river and the estuary where the river meets the sea are visible from the Fort. It is a delight to watch the sunrise and sunset from the ruins of the Fort.  The ancient Kizhur Sastha temple and a Mosque are also situated nearby the Fort.

Speedboat and houseboat rides can be arranged on the backwaters to visit the nearby islands.

Could not access the place, no parking space and no clear cut directions on the road. We were disappointed as we could not enter after going all the way.

It's one of the oldest Fort located in Kasaragod. We can watch awful scenery from there. Can see beautiful views of river and bridge from there. It's on of the avoided place by the tourism department. But now its renovating a little for some reason. If they maintained it well we can get a good place for relaxing. It's actually on of the important historical place in Kerala. Its one of the least visited Fort in Kerala.

Cleanliness. 3*

It's an old fort and you can get some very good view overlooking the river, bridge and the sea. It's quiet and unfrequented during the mornings and can be enjoyed in all its calm. Wish there were more facilities there for children etc.

The fort has an eventful history. In earlier days, the river was considered to be the border of two powerful kingdoms - Kolathunadu and Thulunadu. When Thulunadu was captured by the Vijayanagara Empire, the Kolathunadu kings lost the Chandragiri region to them. During the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, the area was administratively looked after by the Keladi Nayakas of Ikkeri. When the Vijayanagara Empire fell in the 16th century, Vengappa Nayaka declared independence. Later Shivappa Nayaka took over the reins. He built a chain of forts of which Chandragiri is part.

The fort is situated on a hill facing the mouth of Chandhagiri river.
The fort surrounding has been beautified and maintenance of the fort has been done.

The fort is rectangular in shape with a well in the southern end cover with undergrowth.

One small watch tower has been built on the western side giving a view of the river mouth and the sea.

It is an interesting place to go if you are in Bekal. Some of the views of the sea are nice. There is not much information available at the site-I would have liked to learn a bit more of the history. It is worth going if you are in Bekal, though avoid going mid day as it gets very hot and there aren't many shaded areas.

A historical fort, kept uncared by kerala government. Built on ad15 by naik king including bekal and kumbala fort. Tourism department and government of kerala should learn to protect and market such historical monuments.
